Lasithi Plateau and the Zeus Cave from Heraklion: Jeep Safari or Coach Tour?
Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read
The Lasithi Plateau is a high, fertile basin in the mountains east of Heraklion, ringed by peaks and dotted with villages and the stone windmills that gave it its postcard fame. Above one of the villages, the Diktaean or Psychro Cave is the place ancient sources named as the birthplace of Zeus. Heraklion is the usual starting point, and day tours are sold in two broad kinds: a Jeep or Land Rover safari, and a coach trip.
The short answer. For most people the best pick is the 4x4 safari to the Zeus Cave and the Lasithi villages: 8 hours, €89 per person, 4.8 stars over 1,329 reviews, with a stop at a mountain farm for goat milking and local cheese and a traditional lunch with local wine. If you want the same destination for under half the price and do not mind a coach, take the road trip to Lasithi, the Zeus Cave and an olive mill farm at €40.

What the Jeep adds
The three safaris at €89 to €98 describe off-road stretches in a Jeep or Land Rover, and each includes a lunch. The coach tours at €38 to €50 cover the plateau and the cave on roads and add a monastery, a farm or the Knossos palace. The Jeep gets you onto tracks the coach does not use; the coach gets you there for less. Neither is a bad day, but the gap in price is the gap in time and comfort.
The €40 and €38 tours run up to 10.5 and 10 hours, and the long combo to Knossos reaches 11 hours. A day that long is mostly spent in a vehicle, so pick it only if the price matters more than the hours.
The cave itself: the walk and the news
The Diktaean Cave was closed for about two years and, according to Greek news reports, reopened on 29 May 2026 after rock stabilisation, new lighting and upgraded visitor paths. The planned lift up the hillside was dropped. Closures have happened here before, so check on the booking page whether the cave is open on your date and whether admission is included. The site was reported closed one day a week; confirm which.
Getting in is a physical job. Visitor reports describe about a kilometre of uphill walking from the car park, taking some 20 minutes, followed by roughly 200 steps down into the cave and the same back up. The cave sits at about 1,000 metres above sea level. Wear shoes with grip. It is not a visit for anyone who struggles with stairs.
Driving yourself
From Heraklion the plateau is a bit over 60 km, an hour or more by road, with mountain bends at the end. A car gives you your own pace and lets you stop at villages and windmills the coach skips. It also means no wine at lunch, and a lot of road for one person at the wheel. If you want to compare prices, compare car hire for Heraklion and check the excess and CDW terms with the supplier in writing. We do not quote figures for either.
When the guided tour is the better choice
Choose the tour if the lunch comes with wine, if the track beyond the main road is not your idea of a rental-car route, or if you would rather listen to the myth at the cave than read it. Choose the car if you want to be there at opening and leave at your own hour.
