Spinalonga from Heraklion: Day Tour or Boat from Agios Nikolaos or Plaka?
Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read
Spinalonga is the most-booked excursion in the whole Heraklion area, and it is not in Heraklion. The island sits in the Gulf of Mirabello on Crete’s north-east coast, roughly 70 km from the city. That distance is the real choice: do you let a coach do the driving, or do you get yourself to the coast and take a short boat?
The short answer. If you are staying in or near Heraklion and do not want to drive, take the Crete day trip to Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga Island — 4.7 stars over 5,983 reviews, from €37.80 per person, and by a wide margin the most-reviewed Spinalonga listing. If you already have a car, or sleep on that coast, the boat trip to Spinalonga with a swim stop from Agios Nikolaos is cheaper (from €25) and far shorter.

Four ways to get there
| Option | Duration | From | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip to Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga | 8 – 11 hours | €37.80 | No car, a full day, a town stop and a boat in one |
| Spinalonga, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda with BBQ lunch | 5 – 12 hours | €30 | A boat day with a swim and lunch in Kolokytha Bay |
| Spinalonga island tour from Plaka and Agios Nikolaos | 10 hours | €30 | An air-conditioned coach and the shortest boat hop from Plaka |
| Boat trip to Spinalonga with swim stop | 4.5 hours | €25 | Anyone who already is in Agios Nikolaos |
The durations are the ranges the listings give. They are probably wide because the pick-up area decides how long you sit in the coach; check it on the booking page.
What the long day really consists of
On the coach options, the day is mostly road. The Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga day trip lists a visit to the town, Elounda village and a boat to the island, with a guide explaining the fortress. Over eight to eleven hours, perhaps three are spent on the island and in the harbour towns. The rest is travel each way, which probably explains the listing’s wide range.
If that sounds like a lot of bus for one island, it is. It is also the only way to see Spinalonga from Heraklion without hiring a car, and for many people the combination of a pretty harbour town, the lagoon around Elounda and the island is a reasonable trade.
The fortress fee is a separate question
Since 2025 the fortress admission has been €20 for an adult, up from €8 for years, according to Greek travel news. Reduced tickets exist for some groups.
Whether a given tour includes that ticket is not something we can answer for you. The cheapest boat listing at €25 plainly cannot be compared to an all-in day price without knowing. Open the booking page of the tour you like and read the “included” and “not included” lists for the entrance ticket. Do this before you rank two tours by price. A listing at €25 plus €20 at the gate is a different purchase from one at €37.80, if everything is in it.
The boat from Plaka, Elounda or Agios Nikolaos
If you reach the coast yourself, you do not need a tour at all. Local boats cross to the island from several points: Plaka, the shortest crossing at a few minutes; Elounda, a little longer; and Agios Nikolaos, the longest. Fares were reported at about €10, €12 and €16 return respectively, and you pay the fortress fee on top. These are what visitors reported, not a fixed tariff, so ask at the quay.
The advantage of a tour boat from Agios Nikolaos, such as the one with a swim stop, is that it adds a cruise through Mirabello Bay and a swim in Kolokytha Bay for a modest premium. The advantage of going alone is that you pick the hour.
What to expect on the island
Spinalonga was a Venetian fortress, later an Ottoman settlement, and from 1903 to 1957 a leper colony. You walk through the ruined streets and houses inside the walls. Much of the island is open and exposed, with little shade in summer, so sun protection and water matter more than they do on the coach. Allow roughly one to two hours on the island itself, but follow whatever your boat’s return time says.
The fortress is open from spring into autumn and much reduced in winter. Check current hours before you go in the off-season, and know that sailings can be cancelled in strong wind.
When it is not worth it
If you have only one day in Heraklion and it is mid-July, think twice about eleven hours in a vehicle. Knossos fits into a morning, and it needs no long drive.
If you are travelling with children who dislike long coach rides, the shorter boat from Agios Nikolaos is the more realistic version. Operators set their own age limits; look at the participation conditions on the page you choose.
Driving there yourself
The road from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos is a motorway for much of the way, about an hour by car, followed by the coast road to Elounda or Plaka. With a car you can combine Spinalonga with the lagoon at Elounda and a late lunch. If you want to compare prices, compare car hire for Heraklion and read the excess and CDW conditions with the supplier; we do not quote figures for either. Intercity buses also serve this corridor; check the current timetable before you rely on one for a same-day return.
