Santorini as a Day Trip from Crete: Ferry, Timetable, Cost and Whether the Long Day Is Worth It

Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read

White chapels with blue domes on the Santorini caldera rim above a deep blue sea, with the dark cliffs of the island in the distance

Santorini is close enough to Heraklion to be sold as a day trip and far enough that most of the day is spent getting there. The organised versions run from about €185 to €235 per person, and the question is not whether Santorini is beautiful. It is whether you want to trade a long day for roughly five hours on one island.

The short answer. For most visitors who want the day anyway, the guided Santorini day trip from Heraklion is the one to look at: €190 per person, 4.5 stars over 2,180 reviews, with Oia and Fira on the programme and about 5.5 hours of free time on the island. Anyone travelling with small children, anyone who is prone to seasickness and anyone with only a few days on Crete should read the section on who should skip it first.

The durations are the ranges on the listings. Read them as the gap between a morning start and a night return, not as time in Santorini.

What the day looks like

You leave early. Depending on the listing, the day starts with a hotel pick-up or a meeting at Heraklion port, then a fast ferry across the Cretan Sea. Fast ferries on this route take roughly an hour and a half to just over two hours each way, depending on the vessel. You arrive at Athinios, the island’s ferry port, not in a village, and the day tours then take you on to Oia and Fira. Check on the booking page what ground transport is included, because it is the part that is easy to get wrong if you ever decide to do the trip alone.

On the guided trip, the free time of about 5.5 hours is the heart of the day: Oia for the caldera views, Fira for the shops and the cable car. After that you are back at the port for the return crossing.

What it costs, and what a family pays

At €190 per person, two adults pay €380. A family of four is looking at roughly €760 for the tour alone, before lunch, drinks and the cable car on the island. Ask what is included, and whether children pay a reduced price, on the booking page. We have no figure to give you.

You can also book the ferry yourself and arrange the island side on your own. That moves every risk to you: ferry times, getting from the port to the villages, and getting back to the harbour in time for the last crossing. The guided versions sell exactly that removal of risk.

Weather, wind and cancellation

The Aegean in July and August brings strong northerly winds, and fast ferries can be delayed or cancelled when the sea is rough. A day trip leaves no slack: if the crossing is cancelled, you lose the day. Look at the cancellation terms and ask what happens if the ferry does not run.

Who should skip it

Santorini is a lovely place to spend a night or two. As a day trip it turns an island into a checklist. Skip it if:

  • you are on Crete for a week or less and each day is precious;
  • you travel with a baby or toddler, because up to fourteen hours of transfers, a ferry and uneven village paths are a lot;
  • you get seasick. Ask your pharmacist or doctor about it well before the trip; do not wait until the quay;
  • you would rather have a slow day: a sailing trip to Dia or the short boat trip to Spinalonga costs a fraction of the price and a fraction of the hours.

Another way to see it

If you already know you want Santorini properly, plan to stay a night or two instead. If what you want is a day on the water, our Spinalonga and island trips category shows what is available without leaving Crete.
