West Crete in One Day from Heraklion: Rethymno, Chania and Kournas Lake — Doable or Too Much?

Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read

A calm harbour basin with small fishing boats, and pastel and ochre waterfront houses with cafés and parasols behind

The big day trip west is one of the most-booked tours on the island, and the idea is simple: Crete’s two prettiest old towns and its only freshwater lake, without changing hotel. It works, with a condition. You are buying a tour of three stops that mostly consists of road, and you should know the proportions before you book.

The short answer. If you are staying around Heraklion and want a first look at the west, take the Rethymno, Chania and Kournas Lake day trip: 4.4 stars over 2,537 reviews, from €38.70, and by far the most-reviewed of these tours. If you are only going to do it once and can spare two days, do not do it as a day.

The distances, honestly

Heraklion to Rethymno is about 80 km, a little over an hour on the north coast highway. Heraklion to Chania is about 140 km, roughly two hours. Chania to Rethymno is about 60 km. Kournas Lake sits between them, around 45 minutes from Chania. Whatever order a tour takes, the loop is close to 280 km, which is why the listings run to 9 – 14 hours.

Work out the sum: of a 12-hour day, perhaps four to five hours are in the vehicle. That leaves about an hour and a half or two hours in each town and a short stop at the lake. It is enough to walk the old harbour and have a meal, not enough to see a museum or to wander without a clock.

The cheapest and the dearest of the first four are separated by about €12, and the duration tells you more than the price: the 9 – 11 hour tour is the shortest of the four. Check the pick-up area on each page, because a hotel at the far end of the coast adds time to every one of them.

What you get at each stop

Rethymno. A 16th-century Venetian fortress, the Rimondi Fountain, the Loggia and the old mosques, packed into a compact old town. Plenty to see in an hour or two.

Chania. The Venetian harbour and the alleys behind it. The listings describe it as the little Venice of Crete, and it is the stop most people remember.

Kournas Lake. Crete’s only natural freshwater lake. One of the listings mentions renting a pedal boat, so bring swimwear if you want to swim. It is a break from the road, not a destination.

Balos is a different decision

The Balos cruise runs 14.5 to 16 hours and ends with Chania, so you swap one old town and the lake for the lagoon. Read it as a separate trip: a boat day at the far end of an already long drive. Both in one go is a very long day.

When this is not the right plan

If the west is the main reason you came, base yourself in Rethymno or Chania for a few nights and see the area at your own speed. A day trip from Heraklion spends a large part of its hours on the road to show you what a hotel in either town gives you for free. And if you want a particular beach or gorge in the far west, tours that start in Chania or Rethymno are built for that.

If you are in Heraklion for a short stay and just want to know what Chania is like, the day trip is a reasonable sample. If you are travelling with small children, 12 hours in a coach is hard, so read Heraklion with kids for shorter ideas.

Self-drive or tour

With a car you choose the order, can reach Kournas before the day heats up, and can leave a town when you have had enough. You also drive back at the end of a tiring day, and the coast road is the same one as the coach uses. If you decide on a car, compare car hire for Heraklion and check the excess, CDW and fuel policy with the supplier before you pay; we do not quote figures for those.

Choose the coach if you want to look out of the window, have wine at lunch, and not be the driver.

Other long days

The other big excursions from the city are the Spinalonga day trip and the Santorini day trip, both long days as well. For a day in the mountains instead, the Lasithi Plateau and Zeus Cave tour is the alternative, and the gorges, hiking and nature category lists the walks.
